Inspired by the colors and light of the Mediterranean, this original watercolor captures three lemons growing among soft green leaves and a delicate blossom.
Lemon trees have a special place in my life. I have lemon trees in my garden in Spain, and during the time I lived in Italy they seemed to be everywhere, especially around Naples and along the Amalfi Coast. Their yellow fruit, green leaves and unmistakable Mediterranean character have become closely connected to my memories of both places.
Painted with transparent washes of yellow, green and soft earthy tones, this piece is a small celebration of that connection and of the simple beauty of Mediterranean nature. The loose composition keeps the freshness and spontaneity of watercolor at the heart of the work.
